Did you know pregnancy technically has four trimesters? Yep, the “4th trimester” is very real, and honestly, it might be the stage no one prepares moms for enough. Between the sleepless nights, cluster feeding, hormone rollercoasters, and learning your baby one tiny cry at a time… It’s a whole new world.
As a Connecticut newborn photographer, I’ve spent years chatting with moms in every stage of motherhood, from nervous first-trimester secrets to exhausted-but-in-love newborn snuggles in my studio. One thing I’ve learned? No two journeys look the same… but every mom deserves support, resources, and someone saying, “Hey, this is normal.”
So today, we’re diving into all four trimesters, plus some amazing Connecticut resources to help you feel a little more prepared for the wildest, most beautiful adventure of your life.

The 4th Trimester: The Part Nobody Warns You About
Let’s start with the part that surprises almost everyone.
The 4th trimester is the first 12 weeks after birth, and while everyone focuses on the baby, moms are healing physically, emotionally, mentally, and hormonally all at once. It can feel magical one minute and completely overwhelming the next.
I’ve had so many moms come into the studio apologizing because they feel “all over the place,” emotional, exhausted, or unsure of themselves. Truthfully? That’s incredibly common. You are learning an entirely new human while recovering from birth yourself. That’s no small thing.
One thing I always encourage moms to do is build support before their baby arrives.

First Trimester: The Secret Life of Pregnancy

The first trimester feels a little like living a double life. You’re growing a human… but half the time nobody knows yet. Meanwhile, you may be exhausted, nauseous, emotional, bloated, or wondering why crackers suddenly count as a major food group.
I hear so many moms say they expected a cute little bump right away, but instead got the “Do I look pregnant or did I just eat too much pasta?” phase. Honestly, pregnancy glamour usually takes a minute to arrive.
One mom told me she became a professional at strategically holding oversized iced coffees in front of her stomach at family gatherings before announcing. Another said her coworkers figured it out immediately because she suddenly stopped drinking coffee and started carrying saltines everywhere.

Second Trimester: The Golden Era
Ah, yes, the trimester where many moms finally start feeling human again.
For a lot of women, the second trimester brings more energy, less nausea, and the excitement of finally looking pregnant instead of just suspiciously snack-loving. This is usually when maternity photos, pregnancy announcements, and nursery dreaming really begin.
And honestly? This stage is so much fun to photograph because moms start glowing with excitement and confidence.
One of my favorite announcement ideas from clients was a couple who brought tiny baby Converse sneakers to their beach session. Simple, emotional, adorable. Another family let their toddler “announce” the pregnancy with a sign that accidentally said, “Big Brudder.” Honestly? Even cuter.

Third Trimester: Nesting Mode Activated

The third trimester is when things suddenly feel very real.
Hospital bags appear by the door. Tiny baby clothes take over the house. Everyone starts asking if you’re “SO READY,” even though emotionally you’re somewhere between excitement and “wait… we actually bring this baby home ourselves?!”
One thing I’ve noticed from photographing families over the years is that nursery prep varies wildly. Some parents have a Pinterest-perfect nursery completed by 24 weeks. Others are assembling the crib while timing contractions. Both are valid.

And don’t forget to prepare emotionally, too. Babymoons, date nights, slow mornings together, or spending extra one-on-one time with older siblings can make a huge difference before baby arrives

Birth: The Main Event
Birth is one of the most unpredictable, emotional, empowering experiences you’ll ever go through.
Some births go exactly according to plan. Others take unexpected turns. And while every story is different, there’s something incredibly powerful about the moment you finally meet your baby.
One mom once told me, “The second they placed him on my chest, everything else faded away.” Another said her favorite memory was hearing her partner cry before she even saw the baby.
Those moments matter. If you want more details on birth, make sure to check out this blog post, all about 10 Things Your Doctor Doesn’t Tell You About Giving Birth.
That’s one reason birth photography has become so meaningful to families. Even when labor feels chaotic or blurry in the moment, those images preserve the strength, emotion, and connection forever. I do not offer birth photography at this time, so here are some photographer resources for you:

Every Pregnancy Journey Looks Different
Whether you’re currently staring at a positive pregnancy test in total shock, counting down the days until delivery, or deep in the newborn trenches with coffee permanently attached to your hand, you’re not alone.
Pregnancy, birth, and postpartum can feel messy, emotional, exciting, exhausting, beautiful, and overwhelming, sometimes all within the same hour. But having support, community, and trusted resources around you makes all the difference.
And one day? The tiny kicks, swollen ankles, midnight feeds, and newborn snuggles become part of your family’s story, the kind you’ll never want to forget.
