When you’re expecting a baby, you’ll quickly discover there are hundreds of photographers to choose from. As you start looking through websites and social media, you’ll probably come across terms like posed newborn photography, lifestyle photography, fine art, and day-in-the-life sessions.
But what do they actually mean?
Understanding the differences will help you choose a photographer whose style matches the memories you want to preserve. Since newborn photos are something you’ll treasure for decades, it’s worth taking a little time to find the right fit.

Studio Posed Newborn Photography
This is the style I specialize in and have dedicated my career to.
Studio-posed newborn photography is exactly what it sounds like. Your baby is gently and safely posed while sleeping using wraps, blankets, baskets, beds, and carefully selected props. Every detail, from tiny fingers to perfect lighting, is thoughtfully arranged to create timeless artwork.
The studio environment is warm, quiet, and designed specifically for newborns. I provide everything needed for your session, so parents can simply relax while I patiently work around your baby’s needs.
These portraits become beautiful wall art and heirloom albums that never go out of style. Whether your child is five or fifty, these images will still feel timeless.

Lifestyle Newborn Photography
Lifestyle newborn sessions take place in your home and focus on documenting your family naturally interacting with your new baby.
Rather than carefully posing your newborn, the photographer captures real moments, snuggling on the couch, feeding your baby, rocking in the nursery, or siblings meeting their new little brother or sister.
The goal is to tell the story of those first days at home in a relaxed, authentic way.
While these sessions can produce beautiful memories, they have a very different look than posed studio portraits.

Because my passion and expertise are studio newborn photography, I don’t offer lifestyle newborn sessions. If you decide that an in-home lifestyle session is the style you’re looking for, I’d be more than happy to recommend several wonderful photographers in Connecticut whom I trust.
Day-in-the-Life Photography

Day-in-the-life photography is documentary in nature.
Instead of directing or posing, the photographer quietly follows your family throughout part of your day, capturing genuine moments exactly as they happen.
This might include feeding the baby, bath time, reading books together, preparing bottles, or simply enjoying life as a new family.
The emphasis is on storytelling rather than creating portraits.
While I love looking at this style of photography, it’s not a service I personally offer. My passion has always been creating carefully crafted newborn portraits in the studio.
Which Style Should You Choose?

The answer depends entirely on what you want your photographs to look like years from now.
If you love beautifully styled images, sleepy baby poses, timeless portraits, and artwork you’ll proudly display throughout your home, then studio posed newborn photography is likely the perfect fit.
If you want your photographs to document everyday life at home with your new baby, lifestyle or day-in-the-life photography may be a better choice.

Neither style is “better”; they simply tell different stories.
Some families even choose to do both: a posed studio session for heirloom portraits and a lifestyle session to remember those first precious days at home.
My Philosophy

For more than 16 years, I’ve specialized in creating safe, timeless studio newborn portraits for Connecticut families. Every session is baby-led, allowing plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and cuddles while I create artwork you’ll treasure for generations.
I believe newborn portraits should never follow trends that quickly fade. Instead, they should celebrate your baby’s tiny details and your family’s newest chapter in a way that still feels beautiful decades from now.
If posed studio photography speaks to you, I’d love to help you preserve these once-in-a-lifetime memories.

And if your heart is set on an in-home lifestyle session instead, I’m always happy to connect you with talented photographers whose work I truly admire. The most important thing is that you find the style that feels right for your family.
