Becoming a mom is one of the most incredible experiences of your life.
It’s also one of the loneliest.
One day you’re surrounded by coworkers, friends, and a routine. The next, you’re home with a tiny human who sleeps in 90-minute stretches, and your biggest conversation might be with your coffee maker.
If that’s you, I want you to know something:
You are absolutely not alone.
When I had my first baby almost 15 years ago, I felt exactly the same way. I had recently become a mom, my family was thousands of miles away in Germany, and I desperately wanted to meet other moms who understood this new season of life.
So…I did something a little crazy.
I started my own Facebook mom group.
And honestly? It became one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
I collected moms everywhere I went.
At the pediatrician’s office.
At storytime.
At the playground.
At baby classes.

If someone had a baby close in age to mine, chances are I invited them to join our group. Before long, we had an amazing community.
We celebrated Halloween together.
Hosted Christmas parties.
Met for picnics.
Visited local farms.
Planned playdates.
Even celebrated birthdays together.
Some of those moms are still among our closest friends today, nearly 15 years later.
Looking back, those friendships made motherhood so much more joyful.
(And if I hadn’t become a photographer…I’m pretty sure I would’ve become an event planner. 😂)
So if you’re searching for “your people,” here’s exactly where I’d start if I were a brand-new mom in Milford today.
Join Local Mom Groups in Milford, Connecticut

The easiest way to meet other moms?
Find moms who are already looking for friends, too.
Facebook has become one of the best places to start because you can introduce yourself online before attending any events.
Some wonderful local groups include:
- Milford Moms
- Milford Mamas
- Milford, Connecticut Area Moms
- Connecticut Moms Club
- New Haven County Moms
- Making Moms Friend
Many towns around Milford also have active parent groups, including:
Don’t worry if walking into your first meetup feels intimidating.
Almost every mom there has felt the exact same way.
My advice?
Comment on posts first.
Introduce yourself.
Ask questions.
Then attend an event once you’ve recognized a few familiar names.
It’s amazing how much easier it feels when you’ve already “met” people online first.
Some of the best friendships happen naturally while your little ones play.

Visit Child-Friendly Places Around Milford
Here are a few of my favorite places where parents often strike up conversations:
Milford Public Library Storytime
Storytime is perfect for babies and toddlers. Everyone is already sitting together, making conversations feel much more natural.
Eisenhower Park
One of Milford’s favorite playgrounds with plenty of families throughout the week.
Silver Sands State Park
Take a stroller walk along the boardwalk or let older babies enjoy the beach while you chat with other parents.
Connecticut Audubon Society Coastal Center
Nature programs often attract families with young children and create a relaxed atmosphere for meeting people.
Local Music or Baby Classes
Programs like Music Together, Gymboree-style classes, Little Gym, swim lessons, and baby yoga are wonderful because you see the same families every week.
Friendships grow through consistency.

How to Start a Conversation Without Feeling Awkward
Let’s be honest.
Walking up to another mom can feel just as scary as the first day of school.
Here’s the good news:
She’s probably hoping someone talks to her too.
Instead of overthinking it, keep things simple.
Some conversation starters I would’ve used:
“Your little one has the cutest smile! How old are they?”
“Is this your first time here?”
“Have you tried any other storytimes around Milford?”
“I’m always looking for fun places to bring my little one. Do you have any favorites?”
You don’t need a perfect conversation.
You just need one small connection.
If your kids are happily playing together, don’t be afraid to say:
“It was so nice meeting you! Would you want to exchange numbers for another playdate sometime?”
You’d be surprised how often the answer is yes.

Use Social Media to Build Real-Life Friendships
Social media isn’t just for scrolling.
It can actually help you build genuine friendships.
Besides local Facebook groups, check out:
- Instagram location tags for Milford, CT
- Local parenting events on Facebook
- Peanut (the friendship app for moms)
- Meetup
- Eventbrite family events
- Connecticut family blogs and calendars
The best part?
You can also find moms who share your interests.
Love hiking?
There’s probably a Connecticut hiking moms group.
Breastfeeding support?
There are wonderful local communities.
Babywearing?
Cloth diapers?
Homeschooling?
Working moms?
Stay-at-home moms?
There’s truly a group for everyone.

Say Yes More Often
One thing I learned as a new mom is this:
You don’t have to attend every event.
But saying “yes” just one more time than you normally would can completely change your experience.
That random park meetup?
Go.
That library storytime?
Go.
That holiday event?
Go.
That stroller walk?
Go.
Some days you’ll leave after thirty minutes.
Other days you’ll leave with a new friend.
You never know which outing will become the beginning of a lifelong friendship.

Your Village Won’t Happen Overnight
Building meaningful friendships takes time.
Some conversations stay small.
Some playdates never happen again.
But every once in a while, you’ll meet someone who becomes part of your family’s story.
Fifteen years later, I’m still grateful I took that first step and created my own little village.
Those friendships carried me through sleepless nights, toddler meltdowns, birthday parties, school events, and every stage in between.
I truly hope every new mom gets to experience that kind of support.
Because motherhood is so much sweeter when you don’t have to do it alone.
