Fun Things to Do Year-Round That Your Kids (and Camera) Will Love
As a family photographer in Connecticut, one of the most common questions I get from clients is: “What are some fun activities to do with kids around here?” And I totally get it, planning meaningful, kid-friendly outings can be overwhelming (especially if you have more than one opinionated little human). That’s why I put together this list of family-friendly activities that are sure to make everyone smile, and maybe even give you a new favorite photo-worthy spot, too.
Whether you’re a lifelong resident or just visiting, there’s no shortage of amazing things to do in the Nutmeg State with your crew. Let’s dive into some of my favorite family-approved adventures!
Go Wild at Connecticut’s Zoos & Aquariums
Start your day with a trip to The Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport, where you’ll find everything from tigers and otters to a beautiful walk-through aviary. Prefer sea creatures? Head to the Mystic Aquarium, a family favorite with beluga whales, penguins, and hands-on exhibits that will thrill kids of all ages.
Photo tip: Get the kids near the penguin glass for a fun “face-to-beak” moment!
Take It Outside: Nature Centers & Hiking Trails
Connecticut is bursting with gorgeous nature trails and educational outdoor centers. Try the Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton or the Denison Pequotsepos Nature Center in Mystic. Want a more active outing? Hike the Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, which is perfect for older kiddos ready for an adventure.
If you’re like me, you’ll appreciate a good golden hour hike and a chance to sneak in a mini family photo shoot along the way. Win-win!
Feed Their Imagination at Museums & Art Spaces
For rainy days or chilly months, Connecticut offers some amazing indoor fun. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford is loaded with hands-on exhibits and even has a rooftop garden. Or check out the Stepping Stones Museum for Children in Norwalk, it’s like a creativity playground!
If your kids are into art, the New Britain Museum of American Art often has family days and interactive programs for all ages.
Bonus Round: Sweet Treats & Special Stops
No family adventure is complete without snacks (amiright?). Stop by Ferris Acres Creamery in Newtown for homemade ice cream with a view, or grab cider donuts at Lyman Orchards in Middlefield, especially during fall family outings.
As someone who works with families week in and week out, I love being a resource for more than just beautiful photos. My goal is to help you create the memories that make those photos even more meaningful.
So, whether you’re looking for a perfect weekend activity, a place to bring grandparents, or just want to tire the kids out for nap time, this list has something for everyone.
Have a favorite CT spot I missed? Let me know in the comments or shoot me a message. I’m always adding new family favorites to my list!
And of course, if you need someone to tag along with a camera, I know a girl. ;0
