3 Reasons Why Corporate Headshots Are A Great Way to Establish Your Brand

It has never been more important to show off your personality and professionalism with a high quality set of headshots. With so many social networks, company pages, and conferences, it’s vital that your photo set the right tone with clients and competitors alike. So what makes a great corporate headshot?

Capture Your Unique Self

Gone are the days of bland smiles and boring suits. Your headshot needs to let a little of what makes you special shine through. At the same time, you need to project the image your clients and co-workers expect. You have to find the right blend of who you are and what you do. But how?

First, consider your industry. Do you need to project strength? Creativity? Reliability? Compassion? Take some time to think about what clients expect from someone in your position. A headshot is a sales pitch for you, so think about what you’re selling. Choose clothes and settings that back up that image.

Headshot Woman

Now that you are part of the crowd, it’s time to stand out. Let your personality shine through with a big smile, a piece of unexpected clothing like a hat or a bright shirt, or a fun haircut; these are all ways to let clients, customers and co-workers know you aren’t just like everyone else. The key here is to be intentional. Everything about your headshot is selling you, so know what you’re selling.

Showcase Your Brand’s Story

Headshots aren’t just about you, they are about the brand image you are representing. If you’re part of a larger company, incorporate products or brand-related items into some of your shots. If the brand is just you, try props or settings that show off that brand to its best advantage. It could as simple as a realtor next to a “Sold” sign or a children’s book author surrounded by kids. If you wear a uniform, bring it along. Be creative and don’t be afraid to try something big; you can always leave that photo on the cutting room floor, after all.

Don’t rely on one photo to tell your whole story

You will need different kinds of photos for different purposes, so it’s important to have a few ready to go. Always get a straight forward head-and-shoulders photo as pictured below, as it has a myriad of uses.

But there will be times you need a more serious photo, and other times you could use something more original and fun. Make the most of your photo shoot to try to check as many boxes as you can. The more options you have, the better prepared you’ll be to represent yourself the right way.

Use a professional!

The difference between an amateur and a professional photographer is stark, even with the quality of today’s consumer cameras. Professionals not only know the right lighting and editing tricks to make you look your best, they are practiced at loosening you up and coaxing out that natural smile. Your headshot is an ad for you, and a professional photographer will approach that ad with creativity, expertise and diligence. They will be your partner in creating the photos that show you off at your best.

Hopefully these tips will help you take the kinds of headshots that boost your career and your image. Check out my portfolio for some ideas and I’m always happy to answer any question you might have. Now go take some great pics!
