First Two Weeks
Newborn photography has gained popularity in the recent past. The small and cute creases, charming and playful positions, and angelic facial expressions make the perfect shots that parents will want to display. An important question that parents should consider is when they should take newborn photos. But there are some aspects to consider while choosing the age for a newborn photoshoot.
Newborn photographers advise that the best time for photo sessions is within the first two weeks from birth, preferably within the first week or when the baby is 8-12 days old. Here are some reasons why the first two weeks are ideal:
- Babies this age may take prolonged naps, so they can be easily posed. Newborns are usually sleepy, especially after feeding.
- Infants this age still retain the curled-up fetal position that depicts the cute look of a
newborn. Their bodies, at the same time, are petite and compact. - Infants this age are ideal for using props such as baskets, wraps, headbands, and hats, and these may not fit the head after two weeks.
- Baby acne often sets in around week 3 and therefore their skin will be harder to retouch
The First Month
Some photographers may provide photo sessions within a month. The baby will not appear as fragile and miniature as a less than two-week-old newborn. However, there are still plenty of chances to get beautiful pictures. The baby is likely to be more awake and alert at this stage, and furthermore, they may accomplish more expected milestones. A swaddle session is great for older newborns as they will wrapped tightly and feel secure.
Two to Three Months
At about two or three months, babies start developing other changes; they start growing
bigger, the newborn curl becomes less apparent, their faces begin to look fuller, and they become more attentive. At this age, the baby can no longer be posed into “newborn poses” as they start not sleeping as deeply and their body no longer bends as easily.
Handling and Posing
Babies should be handled very carefully, and their neck and head should not be left
unsupported for any period of time. It is best to do simple poses like the fetal position, lying flat on their stomachs with their chins resting on their hands, or the frog-like position. Professional photographers will know what they are doing and make sure the positions are handled safely and done as a composite if needed.
Soothing Techniques
The photographer should have some soothing techniques in mind if the baby gets a bit fussy. To soothe the newborn, gentle rocking, light tapping on the baby’s body, or using pacifiers is a good idea. This means that taking breaks is essential as it can allow the baby to feed. White noise and natural sounds that babies listen to are also helpful
in the background to calm a baby.
Safety
The most crucial aspect is that the newborn should always be safe. They should never be left alone on props or beds. It is advisable to have a person watch them at every instance and ensure they are not involved in other distracting activities. Ensure all fall risks are minimized or eliminated. Safety precautions should also be observed when wrapping, handling, and posing the baby’s body.
Signs of Stress
The key to reading the baby is deciphering their body language during the session. Some specific behaviors that can indicate stress are skin redness, avoiding eye contact, squirming, crying, difficulty breathing, and hiccups. When the baby seems uncomfortable, photographers will pause immediately or end the session if needed.
Conclusion
It is recommended to take pictures of a newborn within a range of 8-12 days of birth since that covers the moments so tender in their infancy. But it still contains many sweet chances in the first month. It is essential one ensures the baby is comfy and secure at all times above all else. Try to identify when babies are stressed. However, with a little preparation and attention, parents will get beautiful newborn pictures they can always look back on.
