Newborn photography is another photography specialization that has gained popularity in the recent past. Being able to record your baby’s first days and weeks in life is always an enjoyable experience. It is something you will treasure for the rest of your life.
Preparing a baby for a shoot takes some time, but the outcome is so adorable that it will make the preparation all worth it. Here are some tips to assist you in preparing for your newborn photo shoot.
Prepare the Location
Choose a space that has a good flow of natural light. When selecting the location for the photo shoot, choose a place with large windows so that you will have a powerful source of natural light. It is advisable to use diffused light when taking photographs of newborns. This means they should not be placed directly under the sun because this can cause some areas of the picture to be in shadow while others are well-lit. This also helps to reflect more light on your baby since white walls reflect light. It is advised that you not overdo the light, however.
Keep Background Simple
It’s better to keep the background more or less plain. Do not select patterns or décor that are too complicated or eye-catching, for they will steal the show from your beautiful little bundle. A plain colored blanket, for example, with a fine texture will bring some interest while still keeping the attention on your baby.
Control Room Temperature
First, since newborns are unable to control their body temperatures, make sure the room is warm enough. Around 75°F is ideal. It is recommended to have a space heater for a cold room because you don’t want the infant uncomfortable or fussy due to cool temperatures.
Gather Essential Props |Swaddling Blankets
You can use several soft, cozy blankets to cover your newborn delicately. Muslin and knit cotton fabrics are ideally suited to give the baby that well-wrapped-up feeling. Avoid using any vivid prints and bright color combinations, opting for plain, solid, and primary colors instead.
Hats & Headbands
Don’t forget about accessorizing! Carry a matching cute hat or a flower headband for your baby to add to his or her outfits. These are value-added features that give the photos a more individualistic touch.
Baskets & Beanbags
Blankets or beanbag chairs should be used as babies’ baskets for newborn photography. They offer a comfortable place to sleep and provide a warm and cozy environment in which to lounge. It also eliminates the risk of your baby rolling over since the sides are raised and curved.
Prepare Your Newborn | Feed & Sleep
Ideally, time the photo shoot when your baby is fed and in a good state for a nap. This is probably one of the most amusing facts: newborns are only happy when sleeping or feeding. Try to start the session roughly half an hour after you have fed your baby, whether through nursing or a bottle.
Minimize Clothing
A very typical mistake is overdressing the baby. Even though it looks adorable when your baby is all covered up, it is better to dress the baby lightly for the newborn photoshoot. Undress your baby completely, or if it is cool, dress them in only the bottom and a thin T- shirt. Do not wear clothes with bright hues or patterns that will compete with the baby’s appeal.
Clean Skin & Hair
Washing your baby before the shoot is a good practice before your baby’s photo shoot. Ensure you take extra care of the face, hands, and feet. Apply body lotions or oil on your baby’s body after their bath so the skin will be soft and not flakey. Comb all hair into position with a soft brush or cloth.
Conclusion
The preparation tips and tricks above should help you prepare your newborn for that sweet moment in front of the camera! If you are thinking about capturing snapshots of the newborn, then try these tips, and you will be on your way to creating great memories that will indeed be treasured by the whole family.
